Using IRC from your Sidekick 2

In order to get on IRC, you will need the following.

1) Terminal off the catalog (9.99 if you have T-Mobile, maybe more for SunCom)
2) A Shell/Linux box. (if you have your own Linux box, why are you reading this, you should know this.)

Ok, so you have bought Terminal, now you need a “shell” (Access to a linux command prompt over the internet.) Well, you can pay for one, but we’ve already spent 10 bucks… Lets see what we can get for free.

Here are a few links to some free ones..

http://silenceisdefeat.org (The one i will be using)
http://shells.thinkgeek.co.uk
http://www.oceanius.com/shells/index.php

All of these require you to have a paypal account or access to a post card & post office. (This is to have your address on file, so if you do anything illegal, they know where to direct the Fed’s)

Ok, so you’ve signed up for an account and gotten your conformation email. It looks like this. (from Silence Is Defeat)

Hostname: silenceisdefeat.org
Port: 22
Protocol: SSH
Username: exiva
Password: xxxxxxxxxxx

When you load terminal you will see this (My terminal app is compiled from the SDK, it may look different than the catalog one)

Hit the menu button, and choose New Host …

Name: Call it whatever you want.
Host: silenceisdefeat.org
Protocol: SSH2

Save the connection. Then choose the connection from the favorites list (click the wheel)

You will see this screen
irc4.png
Login: your username from the email
Password: your password from the email

Save the Host Key Fingerprint

Now, you are in your shell. Applaud yourself.

Now, because you know the Sidekick 2 has very slow connection speeds, so this WILL be laggy. One way i overcome this is to enable Line entry mode by hitting the Menu button.

If you can remember that password you got, congratulations you are a genius (Not really but whatever). But if your like me and can’t. run the command ‘passwd’

The Sidekick 2 looses its connection… often, so as a result you will be tossed off your shell account, and your IRC application will close. But, we can trick the irc app to stay open. run the command “screen irssi”
irc11.png

Now your on IRC, Normal commands will work (/server /join etc)

Ah crap, i lost my G7 Connection. Now what? Simple! Relogin to your account. At the prompt type “screen -r” and you will be taken back to your IRC chat.

Hope this helps some people.
